SPDG Services and How to Request Them

All of the SPDG’s efforts relate directly to the grant’s primary focus of strengthening professional development capacity across the state.  This is accomplished primarily by expanding the expertise available at the Educational Service Cooperative (ESC), district, and school levels relative to the academic and behavioral needs of all students—especially those with disabilities.

SPDG staff specialize in the areas of school improvement/organizational leadership, literacy instruction/ intervention, mathematics instruction/intervention (an emerging area), positive behavioral supports, data-based problem-solving/Response-to-Intervention, and teacher recruitment/retention.  Services from SPDG staff typically involve in-service/professional development training, organizational assessment and strategic planning, technical assistance and consultation, or individual student case analysis and intervention planning.  SPDG staff do not provide services solely to address the needs of individual students, staff, schools, or specific situations.  Instead, given our mission, the professional development or technical assistance involves cross-training with other consultants from the ADE, ESCs, or other schools or districts.  These individuals are present to learn new information and/or to enhance their skills for use in future settings or situations.

Below is a link to our “Request for SPDG Services” form.  Most SPDG services are requested to address an identified need that is reflected in a district or school’s ACSIP (School Improvement) plan, or in a district’s Special Education Corrective Action Plan.  The ACSIP plan is largely focused on activities that improve students’ academic and social, emotional, or behavioral learning, progress, and proficiency.  The Corrective Action Plan focuses on one or more special education service delivery outcomes (e.g., Least Restrictive Environment--LRE, Adequate Yearly Progress--AYP, disproportionality), and is written when a district is out of compliance in a specific area.

If your ESC, district, or school is interested in in-service/professional development training or technical assistance and consultation services from SPDG staff, please complete the information below and submit it (via e-mail) to Dr. Howie Knoff, SPDG Director.  Please know that SPDG staff will make every effort to honor the requests submitted.  Preference is given to requests for services that:  (a) reflect an identified need that has been written into a district or school’s ACSIP plan; (b) are the result of a data-based analysis that demonstrates the services have a high probability of addressing or remediating the identified need; (c) can enhance the knowledge or skills of other consultants, thereby increasing the capacity and resources of other schools, districts, or ESCs; and (d) can be addressed by SPDG staff given the number and complexity of all the requests submitted at any time from across the state.

SPDG Tools and Resources

The SPDG has developed or uses a number of tools and resources to guide its consultative processes in the areas of school improvement/organizational leadership, literacy instruction/intervention, mathematics instruction/intervention (an emerging area), positive behavioral supports, Response-to-Intervention (RtI)/data-based problem-solving, parent outreach, and teacher recruitment/retention.  Some of these tools help to identify the current needs or status of a district, school, staff, or student.  Some help collect and analyze data that leads to instructional or intervention recommendations.  Still others help evaluate the integrity or results of an implemented intervention.

Resources include technical assistance papers or monographs, instructional or intervention materials or protocols, summaries of important research or practice documents, and other resources that discuss important effective school and schooling information or applications.
